Asbury Church

Mysterious Spots

The Chongwenmen Church, or Asbury Church, is located a few hundred metres away from Beijing Railway Station. This stone- and wood-structured church was first established in 1870 by American Methodist missionaries, but was burned down during the Boxer Rebellion. The oldest Protestant church in Beijing, the Asbury shows off a simplified architectural style with a more understated front and octangular roof. After a complete renovation, it can now host over 800 people, as well as throwing full-scale Christian weddings for the neighbourhood. It was here that the ‘Christian General’, Feng Yuxiang, wedded Ms. Li Dequan in 1924.
